"Which school would we be zoned to?" is the first question most families ask about a listing, and the honest answer is that a listing site cannot tell you. Rockwall ISD draws its own attendance zones, redraws them when campuses open, and asks buyers to check with the district directly. This post explains how the system works, what the district's ratings say, and which neighborhoods have a school inside the gates. Every fact links to the district's or the city's own page.
The district in numbers
Rockwall ISD serves Rockwall, Heath, most of Fate and McLendon-Chisholm, and parts of neighboring towns. Its superintendent's page describes 26 campuses, approximately 19,100 students and more than 2,200 teachers and staff (Rockwall ISD, superintendent). The campus list runs to four high schools (Rockwall High School with its ninth grade campus, Rockwall-Heath High School with its ninth grade campus, Quest Academy, and the Dr. Gene Burton College and Career Academy), four middle schools (Cain, Rakow, Utley and Williams) and sixteen elementary schools (Rockwall ISD, select a school). The district office is at 1050 Williams Street in Rockwall.
The 2026 ratings
In the 2026 Texas Education Agency accountability ratings, Rockwall ISD scored 91, an A, up from 87 in 2024. Rockwall High School scored 96, Rockwall-Heath High School 95 and Rockwall Quest Academy 92, all A ratings. The district earned 32 campus distinctions, up from 13 the year before, including nine for closing the gaps and eight for academic growth (Rockwall ISD, 2026 ratings announcement). The district posts its full accountability data on a required-postings page (Rockwall ISD, accountability), and the TEA publishes campus-level reports; look at the campus you would actually attend rather than the district average.
How attendance zones work
The district's attendance zone page is short and specific. Students attend their neighborhood elementary school and the designated middle school; the current map is effective for the 2026-2027 school year and can be downloaded from the page. If you are unsure of your zone, or your neighborhood appears to be split, the district asks you to submit an attendance zone inquiry form and promises a response within 24 hours during business hours. It also warns that the bus-route lookup tool should not be used to determine your attendance zone (Rockwall ISD, attendance zones).
Three things follow from that for a buyer:
- Zones are not the same as city limits. A Heath address can feed a campus in Rockwall and the reverse. Rockwall vs Heath covers the other differences between the two towns.
- Zones change. When Sherry and Paul Hamm Elementary opened, the board approved its zone in December 2019 and moved Hamm, along with all of Celia Hays Elementary, to Williams Middle School starting in 2020-2021 (Blue Ribbon News, December 2019). A home bought in 2018 on the strength of its middle school zone was in a different zone two years later.
- Only the district's answer counts. Put the address in the inquiry form before the option period ends, and keep the reply.
Neighborhoods with a campus inside them
Several newer subdivisions in the district were planned with a school site, which means a walk or a short drive rather than a bus. From the public record:
- Heath Golf and Yacht Club, Heath: Linda Lyon Elementary opened on site in fall 2017 at 1400 Trophy Drive (Blue Ribbon News, 2017).
- Williamsburg, Fate: Lupe Garcia Elementary, the district's sixteenth elementary, opened in 2021 at 310 Williamsburg Parkway inside the neighborhood (Lupe Garcia Elementary, history).
- Woodcreek, Fate: Billie Stevenson Elementary sits inside the community at 636 Stevenson Drive, per a builder's community page; parts of Fate are in Royse City ISD, so confirm the district for a specific address (First Texas Homes, Woodcreek).
- Stone Creek, Rockwall: zoned to Sherry and Paul Hamm Elementary at 2911 Greenway Drive since the December 2019 board vote, feeding Williams Middle School (Blue Ribbon News).
Rockwall-Heath High School is at 801 Laurence Drive in Heath (Rockwall ISD, RHHS profile), which puts it within a few minutes of Buffalo Creek, Stoneleigh and the Heath Golf and Yacht Club. Rockwall High School serves the north and west of the city.
The Fate and Royse City line
Fate is split between Rockwall ISD and Royse City ISD, and the line does not follow a road a buyer would recognize. Royse City ISD covers roughly 77 square miles across Rockwall, Collin and Hunt counties and expects to add 200 to 500 students a year (Royse City ISD, about). It is a different district with different campuses and a different tax rate, so a Fate buyer should ask which district before asking which school. Chamberlain Crossing and the other Fate guides note the district for each subdivision where a public page states it, and our new construction guide goes through the questions to ask a builder's sales office.
What the ratings do and do not tell you
An A rating is a district-wide score built from student achievement, progress and closing-the-gaps measures that the TEA sets, and it moves with the test. Rockwall ISD's own announcement of its 2026 score notes the rise from 87 to 91 in two years (Rockwall ISD). What the rating cannot tell you is class size at a specific elementary this fall, whether a campus is at capacity, or whether a boundary study is underway. Those come from the district's board agendas and from calling the campus. We do that call with clients who are deciding between two homes in two zones; it takes ten minutes and it has changed decisions.
How we check a school zone for a client
- Pull the exact address, not the subdivision, and submit the district's attendance zone inquiry.
- Open the 2026-2027 zone map and confirm the reply against it.
- Check the TEA report for the campus as well as the district.
- Ask the campus about enrollment and any boundary study.
- Write the zone, the date and the source into the file, because it will be asked again at resale.
The Rockwall, Heath and Fate guides list each town's campuses as the district names them. If schools are the reason you are moving, start with Moving to Rockwall for the rest of the picture, then talk to the team about the specific zone you want.
